A World Rabies Day Awareness Programme was organised at Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung on 28th September to observe ‘World Rabies Day’ under the theme ‘Stronger Together’ with Dr. Imtilong Longkumer, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Mokokchung as the Resource Person. The objective of the programme was to create awareness about rabies prevention, responsible animal care and the importance of timely medical intervention following animal exposure. The programme aimed to sensitise students and members of the community to the seriousness of rabies and the measures necessary for its prevention and control.
The programme was chaired by Yimdangjungla, B.A. 3rd Semester, and commenced with an invocation prayer led by Alia, B.A. 5th Semester. In the opening session L.S. Vinod Kumar, the Vice Principal of Fazl Ali College, addressed the gathering, he highlighted the serious public health implications of rabies and emphasised the importance of awareness and responsible community participation. Reference was also made to the Supreme Court’s directives concerning rabies awareness and the control and management of street dogs, underscoring the need for informed and humane approaches to the issue.
The Resource Person Dr. Imtilong Longkumer delivered an informative and engaging session on rabies. He provided valuable insights into the importance of awareness and sensitisation, particularly among elders and older members of the community. He explained the seriousness of rabies, its fatal nature once clinical symptoms develop, and the critical importance of seeking immediate medical attention following an animal bite or other possible exposure.
The speaker also emphasised timely vaccination, appropriate post-exposure measures and responsible behaviour towards animals, while addressing common misconceptions surrounding rabies transmission and prevention.
The programme concluded with a strengthened understanding of the need for collective responsibility, timely action and sustained public awareness in combating rabies. The event served as a meaningful educational initiative, equipping participants with essential knowledge to contribute towards a safer and more informed community.
